Title: Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) Sustainable Food Systems Modeling
The Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, University of Manitoba is seeking a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor.
As the successful candidate you will advance the University as an innovator in its strategic research theme of Safe, Healthy, Just and Sustainable Food Systems on the national and international research stages, thereby expanding the success realized by the National Centre for Livestock and the Environment (NCLE; http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/afs/ncle/index.html). The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences is one of the most research-intensive Faculties at the University of Manitoba. You will be welcomed to a vigorous research environment with ample opportunity for collaboration among a diverse team of scientists from agricultural and food systems, as well as social, economic and policy experts. The systems research environment in our Faculty is fostered through the NCLE as well as affiliations with the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals (http://umanitoba.ca/centres/rcffn/) and the Natural Systems Agriculture program (http://www.umanitoba.ca/outreach/naturalagriculture/). This collegial environment will provide access to numerous large data sets, enabling you to develop a rigorous, independently-funded research program with immediate impact and further, to realize your full potential to become a world leader in your research area. In doing so, you will help shape the next generation of evidence-based analyses of food systems by developing new techniques to integrate these large data sets including multiple livestock production systems, environmental sustainability and social indicators. You will develop novel techniques to integrate these data in a mathematically and socially meaningful way. These systems-modelling analyses will serve to identify alternative management practices, inform policy related to livestock and the environment, and enhance the adaptive capacity of the sector. To carry out this work, you will have access to a dedicated modeling lab with working stations and space for round table brainstorming meetings with members of your team.
As the successful candidate, you must possess a PhD and have proven success in animal science, biosystems/ agricultural engineering, mathematics, or environmental science/engineering with expertise in systems modelling and a good understanding of animal and crop production processes. As well, you must have a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, strong publication record, and a demonstrated potential for attracting research funds. Also, you should have a strong commitment to conducting interdisciplinary research and the ability to develop a stimulating research environment which will attract high caliber graduate students. You will be expected to participate in the teaching and service functions of the Department. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
