Department of Animal Science
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS)
Ithaca, New York
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University invites applications and nominations for Professor and Chair of the Department of Animal Science (https://ansci.cals.cornell.edu/). For more than a century, the Department of Animal Science has pioneered the discovery, dissemination and application of knowledge that improves the health and wellbeing of animals and people. The mission of the department is to discover and disseminate new knowledge about the biology and management of domestic animals and to apply this knowledge to benefit society. Our land-grant legacy continues today through global programs to confront some of society's most urgent needs with innovative solutions. These efforts include research conducted on and off campus, including at a new 500-cow dairy research center. The department is an active participant in university-wide initiatives such as the Dairy Center of Excellence and the David R. Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future and is home to the nationally recognized PRO-DAIRY extension program. The department administers the second largest undergraduate major in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and has extensive graduate programs. Whether we address enhanced animal performance through nutrition and reproduction, the improvement of livestock breeds using genetics and genomics or the development of sustainable animal production systems, we seek to guide our field in the twenty-first century and beyond. Our broad extension efforts translate this science to stakeholders and policymakers, while our extensive undergraduate and graduate teaching programs prepare our students to become leaders in a changing world.
The college seeks a prominent scientist to lead the department as its Chair in all aspects of academic activity, including stewardship of resources and personnel. The Chair will develop a vision for future growth in the department and provide strategic leadership to enhance the cohesiveness of the department's current and emerging programmatic areas. The Chair will have an appreciation for the contributions of both basic and applied research to the mission of the department. In collaboration with the faculty and academic staff, the Chair will foster excellence in teaching, research, extension and outreach activities for the advancement of animal and human wellbeing. The Chair additionally will provide oversight for the recruitment, retention and professional development of departmental faculty and staff. The Chair furthermore is expected to pursue scholarly activities in her or his area of expertise.
Candidates will be expected to have an internationally recognized research and funding record consistent with an appointment at the rank of full Professor at Cornell. An earned Ph.D. is required in a discipline relevant to the department's multi-disciplinary interests. Candidates holding veterinary degrees in addition to a Ph.D. are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have a record of leadership, active participation in academic affairs, commitment to diversity and inclusion and evidence of balance and excellence in teaching, research and/or extension and outreach activities.
We seek an enterprising, inspiring and collaborative leader who will be hired as a full Professor, to serve as Chair for five years with the possibility of renewal. The incumbent would hold a 9-month, tenure-track appointment. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2018 or as negotiated.
