Clemson University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences (CAFLS). Clemson University seeks a strategic and visionary individual to lead the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences in fundamental science education, research and outreach. The successful candidate will have experience enabling leadership in a premier academic setting and can serve as a strong advocate for CAFLS, and its faculty, staff, and students.
Founded in 1889, Clemson University is a land-grant institution committed both to world-class research and a high quality of life. Seven interdisciplinary colleges are home to a dedicated and diverse student body of approximately 23,000 undergraduate and graduate students. A faculty over 1,200 and staff of 3,500 support over 70 undergraduate degree offerings and more than 75 masters and 45 doctoral programs. An annual operating budget of $1.1 billion and an endowment of more than $825 million fund programs and operations.
The College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences is one of seven colleges at Clemson University. A recent university reorganization has brought together five well-established departments offering BA, BS, MS and PhD degree programs and centers and institutes: Animal and Veterinary Sciences; Food, Nutrition and Packaging Sciences; Agricultural Sciences; Forestry and Environmental Conservation; and Plant and Environmental Sciences. The college has 124 faculty and 57 staff, with 1,861 undergraduate majors and 276 graduate students.
Public Service and Agriculture (PSA) is made up of four interrelated units: Experiment Station, Cooperative Extension, Livestock Poultry Health and Regulatory Services. Clemson PSA programs develop and deliver impartial science-based information in five areas that align with the national land-grant university system and touch the life for every South Carolinian. Those areas are: agrisystems productivity and profitability; economic and community development; environmental conservation; food safety and nutrition; and youth development and families.
The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the college and reports directly to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. The next Dean will also hold the title of Associate Vice President for PSA, and in addition to leadership of all academic departments in CAFLS, the Dean will have leadership of Cooperative Extension and the Experiment Station. Clemson University is seeking a leader who will continue the ongoing integration of CAFLS and PSA in a way that sustains the important missions and goals of each entity, but also capture significant synergies that can be afforded by integrating them.
The Dean holds faculty rank and provides leadership, vision, and strategic planning to help formulate and implement educational policies while serving as the collegiate faculty's agent in the execution of such policies. The Dean serves as the principal internal and external spokesperson for the college as well as for its mission. The successful candidate will have earned a Ph.D. and achieved a record of scholarly activity appropriate for a tenured appointment in the college at the rank of professor.
