The primary duties and responsibilities include those related to a leadership position in our veterinary diagnostic laboratory section dedicated to diagnostic bacteriology; e.g., clinical bacteriology, serology, molecular diagnostics, etc. The incumbent will be the Section Head for the WVDL microbiology-bacteriology section, and provide intellectual and practical working knowledge involving pathogens of animals and the array of laboratory tests available to test for them. In carrying out these responsibilities, the incumbent will supervise and direct staff in performance of diagnostic testing, interpretation of tests/testing, and reporting of results to clients and stakeholders. Other duties related to this leadership position with supervisory responsibilities include active involvement in our laboratory quality system, performance evaluations, recruitment, and training and education of staff. In addition to holding regular section meetings, the Section Head of microbiology-bacteriology works with others on the WVDL administrative team, including supervisors, section heads, and the director and associate director, and takes on other work and projects as needed. This position requires supervision and use of BSL-2 facilities, as well as BSL-3 facilities as needed. Some of the work is within the sponsorship of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) program, and familiarity with this program is a program is a plus. This position is included in a clinical diagnostic professorial track; i.e., assistant, associate, and full clinical diagnostic professor, within the Department Pathobiological Sciences in the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. The appointment level depends upon education, relevant experience, professional and academic achievements and related factors. Whereas the majority of work expectations lie within those discussed above, significant opportunity is available at the WVDL, UW School of Veterinary Medicine, and the UW in general for scholarly activity. These include basic and applied research, teaching, and outreach. Publication and involvement in local, national, and international scientific groups is encouraged. These activities are considered for purposes of advancement/promotion.
