Description: The Department of Animal Sciences in the College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University seeks to employ a 9-month, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank in Dairy Cattle Health and Physiology to begin in spring 2018 or when a suitable candidate is found. This position will have a research emphasis, and Candidates with research expertise in optimizing dairy cow health, especially mammary gland health, and productivity are encouraged to apply. Potential research topics include, but are not limited to: 1. Dairy cow immunological defense systems. 2. Development and application of new technologies that improve immune responses. 3. Characterization of mastitis-causing and other economically important microbial pathogens of dairy cows and their virulence factors. 4. Response of mammary gland and milk components during mastitis. 5. Assessment and application of new technologies that advance disease (including mastitis) control and milk quality.
Two dairy herds (n = ~150 each) are available for intensive research and teaching (Columbus, Jersey herd; Wooster, Holstein herd). A large laboratory equipped for mastitis research (modifiable) will be available for the successful candidate.
Expectations: The successful candidate is expected to establish a nationally and internationally recognized research program supported by extramural funding and have an impact on the quality and safety of dairy products and the health and welfare of dairy cows. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with current faculty to continue pursuing common themes within the Department such as enhancing milk quality and nutritional value, pre-harvest food safety, animal welfare, environmental compatibility of livestock operations, and the economic profitability of food animal production systems. The faculty member will also be expected to work closely with faculty colleagues, extension educators, and partners in allied animal industries towards a common goal of fulfilling The Ohio State University’s and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) missions and exploring the National One Health Initiative, which focuses on associations among animal health, human health, and the environment. The successful candidate will be expected to mentor and supervise graduate students and contribute to our department’s teaching mission.
Qualifications: Requirements include a Ph.D. in Animal Science, Dairy Science, or a closely related field. Demonstrated excellence in innovative research and a strong commitment to teaching are essential. Applicants must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills in addition to the ability and desire to collaborate with others in a collegial team environment. Leadership and academic excellence should be evident in the application. Industry experience is desirable. Preferred Qualifications: Experience developing or working in interdisciplinary research teams, experience in mentoring members of underrepresented groups.
