Sam Houston State University, a member of The Texas State University System, is conducting a search for the position of Department Chair, Department of Agricultural Sciences. The position start date is January 1 - July 1, 2018. Sam Houston State University is a state-supported, comprehensive university of approximately 21,000 students. The University is in Huntsville, Texas, a city of 38,000 people located sixty miles north of Houston. The Chair is responsible for academic leadership in the department in its efforts to recruit, retain, and develop a diverse and distinguished faculty; to support faculty in scholarly and grant activity; to advise, recruit and retain students; to carry out strategic planning and budget preparation; to pursue an active research agenda; to maintain our excellent relationship with the SHSU Ag Alumni Association; to actively support and pursue fundraising and facilities development; to serve as the administrator of the Gibbs Ranch; teach one course per semester (including summer), and to fulfill other duties as needed. The department maintains five off-site facilities with working laboratories including our Agriculture Center, Horticulture Center, William R. Harrell Agricultural Engineering Technology Center, soils lab, and the 1,700+ acre Gibbs Ranch. More Department of Agricultural Sciences information is available on our website at www.shsu.edu/agr.
Required qualifications include an earned doctorate in one of the disciplines served by the Department of Agricultural Sciences including agricultural business, agricultural communications, interdisciplinary agriculture, agricultural engineering technology, animal science, agricultural education, and plant and soil sciences; tenured associate or full professor; a record of published research in peer-reviewed journals; a record of external funding and academic program development; and evidence of working with businesses and organizations to support an academic program. Additional qualifications include evidence of excellence in college teaching and research, administrative experience in budgeting and personnel management, a demonstrated record of administrative success, and experience working with graduate and undergraduate programs.
